One of our most favourite things we did as a family last year was plant our new vegetable garden. My husband did quite a bit of research on how to get the most out of our growing season and what he came across was something called a Hugelkultur. There is some reading I found on it here.
Basically, it is a raised garden bed full of rotting wood, tree branches, leaves, grass, all those things you need to dispose of every year in the green bin or compost. It was an amazing use of all the otherwise composted material in our yard and it basically acted as a forest bed holding in all those nutrients, air pockets, rich soil and moisture. Considering it was our first year doing so, we were pleasantly surprised with the results! Just one cherry tomato plant alone produced HUNDREDS of tomatoes. We had beautiful beans, zucchini, cucumbers, and spaghetti squash too! Please check out our little video and stay tuned for our next years video too!
